FUNCTIONAL
ELECTRICAL STIMULATION
What
is Functional Electrical Stimulation?
Functional
electrical stimulation is when a muscle is caused to contract from an
external stimulation. It is common in patients who have a neurological
condition for some of the muscles not to work, functional electrical
stimulation is a means to get a contraction in these paralysed muscles.
How
can Functional Electrical Stimulation benefit people with neurological
conditions?
It’s most common
use is to help people with a dropped foot. This is when the individual
has difficulty in lifting their foot when walking. A stimulator can
cause this muscle to contract and therefore can make walking for them
easier.
It can also be used
to assist in strengthening muscles in the arms and legs. It can also
help with pain and decreased movement in shoulders, especially following
a stroke.

Physiotherapy is an accredited user of functional electrical
stimulation.
